Do you want your network designed and installed using free labour?Contact: Michael Thompson (Sonny\'s lecturer)michael.thompson@manukau.ac.nzph (09) 9688000We have three final-year students who are looking for clients. If you agree to offer one of these a network project, they will:-\n\n· Discuss with you what you are considering doing and will suggest approaches todoing things you may not have considered.· Review all of your existing equipment and installed software and the way your computers are networked and summarise this for you.\n\n· Propose an upgraded solution identifying any capital costs\n\n· Following your approval:-\n\no Acquire any new equipment and software (your cost)\n\no Migrate and install new equipment and software (often including any re-cabling)\n\no Configure servers for your users\n\no Document and train your staff in the use of the revised system\n\nSuch projects often include helping businesses in many ways. Examples are:\n\n· Migrate to new products -- for example Windows XP to Vista, Office 2003 to Office 2007\n\n· Introduce more flexible use of mobile computers like notebooks and data assistants so that staff can easily synchronise data held on a central point with what they work with on their notebooks\n\n· Introduce wireless networks\n\n· Introduce better internet access control and monitoring through the use of better proxy software\n\n· Improve the security and backup procedures for your electronic data\n\nThese projects should involve the student for around 450 hours of effort over approximately 16 weeks, and are supervised by an experienced staff member at Manukau Institute of Technology. This expertise is free (labour only) to you, but these projects also require serious commitment from you and your staff. If you have a serious need to move forward with your IT use, MITCIT would welcomeyour participation with a student starting immediately, for completion in July.
